Set up in 1996 to promote Malaysia's rich cultural heritage, it houses a wide array of handcrafted item reflecting the diverse cultures and lifestyles of multiracial Malaysians. Besides that, it houses a Royal Museum, an Islamic Museum and a Heritage Museum.
The Langkawi Craft Complex is located at the picturesque Teluk Yu (Shark Bay) in Mukim Bohor. It is only about 21 km from Kuah Town via Ulu Melaka road and 24 km from Langkawi Airport. The complex is accesible by car. This is a one-stop arts and crafts centre brimming with much sought-after items of craftworks - from forest-based products, fabrics, ceramics, to metal artifacts and beautiful objects reprensenting the various ethnic groups of Malaysians. At the demostration centre of the complex, visitors can learn from skilled craftsmen the intricate techniques of producing local works such as weaving batik painting, wood carving, and plaiting. Also on display are static representations of wedding ceremonies and customs of Malaysians. Georgeous silverware and brassware in various shapes and forms adorned with motifs inspired by nature. Beautiful baskets of rattan, mengkuang, pandan leaves were woven in colourful ethnic designs. Closer look at the ever popular favourite will awe you with the hand-drawn and printed batik and songket or silk material interwoven with gold and silver threads - the essence of Malay design in the past and used for all official and royal function.
There are also intricately beadworks and bamboo carvings with designs that are hundreds of years old - created by the tribes of Sabah and Sarawak, e.g. : Pua weaving of Iban tribe and Mogah textiles of the Bajau tribe. At the Museum of History and Legends, all the colourful facets of Langkawi's legends and myths are told through dioramas. |
